Why You Need Professional Stump Grinding Services

Professional stump grinding services are needed to remove tree stumps that can otherwise pose a tripping hazard, attract pests, or create an eyesore on your property. Attempting to remove stumps on your own can be dangerous and ineffective, as the roots can extend deep into the ground and require specialized tools to remove. With professional stump grinding services, stumps can be quickly and safely removed, leaving behind a clean and leveled surface.

How Our Stump Grinding Process Works

1. On-site look and free estimate

We start with a free visit to see the stump in person. We measure it across its widest point, including the root flare, check for surface roots you also want gone, and note what sits nearby: fences, foundations, driveways, flower beds and irrigation. We also look at how our grinder will reach the stump, since gate width, slopes and soft ground all affect the plan.

2. The plan

We tell you what we will grind, how far out we will follow the roots, and what the spot will look like when we finish. If you plan to lay sod, plant a new tree or build over the area, tell us now, because that decides how deep and wide we grind.

3. Grinding

The grinder’s cutting wheel shaves the stump down in passes until it sits below the soil line, turning the wood into chips mixed with soil. We work slowly near plantings, edging and hard surfaces.

4. Cleanup and walkthrough

Before we leave, we walk the area with you and settle what happens with the chips and the hole, including the topsoil and grass options described above. Many homeowners keep some of the chips as mulch for their beds.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any buried lines you know of, and make sure utilities have been marked through 811 before work starts.
  • Flag sprinkler heads, irrigation lines, landscape lighting wires and invisible pet fences near the stump.
  • Move vehicles, furniture and toys away from the work area.
  • Keep pets and children inside while we grind, and unlock any gates we need to pass through.

Common questions

How much does stump grinding cost? The price depends on the stump’s diameter, how many stumps you have, how far the roots spread and how easy the spot is to reach, and we give you a number at the free estimate. Our fees are based on the time we spend on site, so it helps to have all your stumps handled in one visit.

Is it worth it to grind a stump? Yes, if you want to use that space again, because a stump left alone can take many years to break down and may keep sending up sprouts.

How deep do you grind? We grind below the soil line, and deeper when you plan to plant or lay sod there. Share your plans at the estimate so we can set the depth to match.
